Cathay House Blend

? vibrant ? colours ? alive ? fragrant ? nation ? prosperous ? people ? peaceful

This journey in search of an imaginary space, where cultures of the East and West truly interact, took its references from 1930's Shanghai. It manifested itself in an innovative performance in the National Museum of Scotland. Here Edinburgh dancer, Chang Zhang creates the atmospher amongst several Tai Chi groups.

The distinctive sound of the mahjong pieces clicking around the mahjong table are part of the musical discovery, set against an intricate and multi-faceted musical score by Melange Network's Kimho Ip, Shi Yan and the arts collective/pop band FOUND
The youngest participants are young Scottish Chinese musicians, some of whom later sang beautifully to traditonal Chinese music.

Kimho Ip on Yang Qin (left) was producer and artistic director of the event, this time wearing his In2national 'hat'.

18 performers of the Seven Stars School of Taijiquan performed their Tai Chi movements to the Cathay House Blend of music.

Dancer/choreographer, Anne-Marie Culhane (in red) weaving her way through the Tai Chi performers, and joined by fellow choreogrpaher Chang Zhang.

An appreciative audience warmly applauded this transformation of part of the Museum foyer into a make-believe tea house. Here there was no elaborate set to take us to Shanghai, only a few props and the intricate and elaborate music from a talented ensemble.
